Government Official Confirms MoD Looking at Potential Threat from Chinese Cars, as Personnel Told to Refrain from Confidential Discussions in Cars.

A defense minister has revealed that the MoD is actively investigating the potential security risks associated with Chinese cars, and staff have been instructed to refrain from discussing secret matters in any vehicles.

Safety Guidance for MoD Staff

In a recently aired interview on a radio station, Luke Pollard commented on claims that MoD staff have been told not to talk about classified information while travelling in China-made cars.

He explained that the MoD is “examining” cars from China within its vehicle pools, however stressed that security is a concern in all modern vehicles.

We have a collection of tens of thousands of vehicles in the MoD and those vehicles account for a tiny fraction.
However whether you’re traveling in a Chinese car or a car from another country, what we’ve asked our staff is to avoid connecting Ministry of Defence devices into their vehicle, not to have conversations at a classified classification in any kind of car, due to the growing risks of surveillance that are present in every single vehicle, to only have those secret conversations in secure locations. This is a wise and sensible thing for everyone concerned about safety.

After it was suggested that it would be prudent for the MoD to stop using all Chinese vehicles, Pollard replied: That is exactly what we’re investigating at the moment.”

Broader Security Background

This announcement comes as reports from Scandinavian countries have alerted the United Kingdom to the presence of multi-purpose shutdown mechanisms in Chinese buses, which could allow the Chinese government to switch off public transport and cause disruption to public transit.

Additionally, a Russian intelligence vessel has been shining lasers at RAF pilots, labeled a “highly dangerous” act by defence officials.

The broader defence situation highlights the significance of strong measures and vigilance in every aspects of government operations, including transport use to discussions habits.
