Trump's Woke Alarm Overlooks The Continent's Real Danger: Economic Decline.

Donald Trump's national security strategy presents a flawed assessment of Europe. It claims that open-border policies and so-called "progressive" policies represent an existential risk to the continent's identity. However, this argument is based on a serious misreading of the reality. The actual challenge confronting the EU is not cultural but economic and technological backwardness.

A Glaring Growth Gap Between Europe and the US

Statistics reveal a sobering contrast. Between 2008 and 2023, American economic output grew by eighty-seven percent, while a mere 13.5% growth for the EU. During this time, European income per person dropped from over three-quarters to just 50% of the US level. Strikingly, even the poorest US state now boasts a greater average income than several leading EU nations like France and Italy.

Currently, roughly 50% of the global top fifty tech companies are American, while only four are from Europe.

The Innovation Shortfall: The Core Question

The growing disparity is driven by superior efficiency gains in the US, fueled by breakthroughs and higher total factor productivity. The scene of global tech leadership is overwhelmingly US-centric. In the last five decades, hundreds of American startups have scaled into companies valued at more than ten billion dollars, compared with only fourteen in Europe.

This gap raises a pressing issue: As the competition for tomorrow's sectors like AI, semiconductors, and fusion energy, where does Europe stand? Most analysts concede it is essentially a contest between two involving the United States and China, with Europe starting at a clear handicap.

Root Causes of the Continent's Innovation Gap

A number of key factors account for this innovation chasm.

  • Venture Capital: The US boasts a far deeper and agile network for funding startups. Europe still lacks a true capital markets union, which caps the scale of new firms.
  • Regulatory Fragmentation: Complex and divided regulation hinder European business. A US startup can launch a service under a single set of laws to access a market of hundreds of millions. The European Union, despite a bigger population size, is split among 27 different national regimes, creating huge internal barriers.
  • Cultural Attitudes: Views on risk-taking vary greatly. In parts of Europe, a startup's collapse was historically viewed with stigma, whereas in the United States, it is often seen as a valuable lesson.
  • Defense Spending: The United States enjoys a tightly woven academic-military-industrial complex. Europe's chronic underinvestment in defense has weakened its capacity for pioneering research.

The Road Ahead: Reasons for Cautious Optimism

Despite these hurdles, one can find causes for optimism. European leaders are increasingly aware of the existential challenge and have begun to advance substantial change. Key analyses on European competitiveness and the internal market point to the necessity of major changes.

Given appropriate policies and rule changes, Europe's strengths might enable far greater levels of business-led breakthroughs.

Europe still possesses significant advantages: high-quality workforce, top-tier schools and universities, and world-class research institutions. Coupled with a large internal market and high savings rates, these elements could unleash a surge of investment and entrepreneurship.

Crucially, even if the EU does not take the lead in creating cutting-edge technologies, it can still significantly boost productivity by adopting and adapting advancements from elsewhere.

An Inflection Point

The European Union now faces a decisive crossroads. As the saying goes, decline often happens "slowly, then all at once". To date, Europe's slide in innovation has been steady. But, if it fails to take bold steps to tackle its structural weaknesses, today's slow erosion could give way to a rapid and permanent loss of global economic relevance.
